The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award equips young people for life. It is the world’s leading youth achievement award and Ajman Academy Grade 12 students will participate for the second year.

Students will work towards the Bronze & Silver Awards.

There are 4 sections of the award that need to be completed:

  • Community Service
  • Physical Recreation
  • Skill
  • Expeditions

By creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure, the Award can play a critical role in their development outside the classroom.

It also allows their achievement to be consistently recognised worldwide, giving young people unique international accreditation of their experiences.

The Award is transforming individuals, communities and societies around the world. Young people who do the Award become more confident and resilient, and develop skills in areas such as communication, problem solving and leadership. This in turn impacts on their communities, who see improvements in areas including employability, health and well- being, and educational attainment.

Young people design their own Award programme, set their own goals and record their own progress. They choose a Service, Physical Recreation, Skills activity, go on an Adventurous Journey.

The only person they compete against is themselves, by challenging their own beliefs about what they can achieve.

A message from our International Award Coordinator, Diego Lopez

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth development award.  Participating students have to complete four sections, three of them – Physical Recreation, Skill and Service – for an hour a week over a set period of time to develop their team-working, communication, organization, planning and leadership skills.  Physical Recreation includes any sporting activity; many of the students train and represent the school in swimming, basketball and football matches, whilst others prefer to develop their fitness at the gym.  The Skill section requires students to develop an existing skill, or pursue new knowledge; currently, IA students are developing their skills in Quranic recitation, journalistic writing, acting, photography and debating.  Students have to voluntarily commit their time to help a community or community group for the Service section; students have assisted at sporting events and with activities in the Primary school to fulfil the requirements of this section, developing their ability to work with all age groups and building their understanding of the planning and preparation that takes place behind the scenes of any event or activity.

The final section, and by far the students’ favourite, is the Adventurous Journey.  Students have to undertake an exploratory journey in which they remain self-sufficient over a set period of time – for the Bronze level, two days and one night.  The International Award provides a great opportunity for students to build their skills and confidence beyond the classroom and we look forward to many more students joining us on the Award journey next year.”
